Last summer during a tragic interaction between George Floyd and the Minneapolis Police Department, Floyd lost his life at the hands of an officer. It began with George Floyd purchasing a pack of cigarettes with a counterfeit $20 bill. The police arrived on the scene and tension immediately rose. In an attempt to restrain Floyd, Chauvin placed his knee between Floyd’s head and neck. For 9 minutes. This resulted in George Floyd’s death.
Since the incident, Minneapolis citizens have been protesting non-stop advocating for justice for Floyd and the BLM movement. Just recently, Derek Chauvin has been found guilty on all accounts including second-degree manslaughter and third-degree murder, and will be facing up to 40 years in prison.
The trial lasted for close to a year and had received international news coverage. “…race, title, and job aside he killed someone brutally and with no mercy,” said Jeremiah Alexander (12).
Police officers have a duty to protect and serve their people and with that, also comes power. “There needed to be consequences for his (Chauvin’s) actions, too many police officers abuse the power they’re given and hopefully this sets an example for others that they can’t keep getting away with it,” said Sophia Truong (10).
