No Seriously, Go Do Some Research Before Debating

Before starting a debate, make sure you know what you are talking about

You know it is election time when you go onto social media and see political debates everywhere.

This weekend, I was in a six hour long debate with a white male on Facebook. He claimed that Donald Trump, a republican presidential candidate, worked harder for his money than Bernie Sanders, a democratic presidential candidate. He continued to mock anyone’s opinion that differed from his.

What upset me the most was that it seemed he got most of his information from Wikipedia because most of his statements were false. This is not the first time I had gotten into a debate with someone who clearly did not do their research on the topic.

He mentioned that Trump was born into a rich family and started a 14 billion dollar company with only a “small loan” for one million dollars which takes a lot of work, more work than anything Sanders has done. He made comments saying that Sanders doesn’t have any experience and he targets the young and middle class families because they don’t do anything and expect more money for it.

He failed to mention, or know, that Bernie Sanders was a son of a Jewish immigrant and has had experiences being in the elective office for 34 years already: a senator since 2006, representative from 1990-2006, mayor of city of Burlington from 1981-89, candidate of United States House of Representatives in 1988, and candidate for governor 1972,1976,1986. While Trump has had no political experience.

Before I concluded that he clearly has no intention of researching more about Sanders and Trump, he brought up that women and man both have equal rights and continuously called me a “feminazi”. He mentions how feminism is nothing but a bunch of annoying girls who hate and fight for really nothing that is needed in America.

I wasn’t insulted by being called a “feminazi”,  being a feminist is something I am proud to call myself and feminism is what has gotten us girls this far. However, if you are a white male, you have no room or knowledge to say that there is equality between males,  women, or minorities because you will only look like an ignorant and uneducated person.

If you choose to debate with someone about any topic, make sure you are well educated and informed before debating.
