Oxford Dictionary Chooses Word of the Year

                       The 2015 Oxford word of the year is …. ?

The 2015 Oxford dictionary named its word of the year yesterday. However, this word has no letters. Just like the Oxford dictionary does every year, a team of lexicographers got together to find a word FullSizeRenderthat captured America’s biggest trend or change that happened this year. Instead of finding a word, the Oxford dictionary partnered with Swift-key (a keyboard app company) to choose the “The Face With Tears of Joy”emoji as its word of the year.

According to cnn.money.com the organization knew it wanted to pick an emoji as
the word of the year for 2015. The emoji was first introduced back in 2010. The lexicographers had over 1,000 emojis to choose from when trying to come up with the word of the year. According to usatoday.com “The Face With Tears of Joy” helped capture the ethos, mood, and preoccupations of 2015.”

“The Face With Tears of Joy” emoji was used about was used about 20 percent in the United States and in the U.K. This making it the most used emoji in 2015. The second most used emoji in the United states is ? . The “A face throwing a kiss”. Even though the Emoji was chosen as Oxford’s word the year, Oxford has not defined an emoji in their database and they plans to keep it that way. The word emoji has been defined in the OED and the Oxford’s Dictionary Online in 2013.
