Cherry Creek School’s Sixth Annual Poetry Slam is on Thursday April 14th at Eaglecrest High School at 6:30 pm.

Jay Cooney, a Senior at Smoky Hill, will  participate in the competition and started doing slam poetry during her Sophomore year in Mrs. Delemont’s class.

“It’s just a really good way of saying things I wouldn’t necessarily say otherwise because I’m not really a loud person with how I feel. Slam gives me that opportunity to like put it [my emotions] out there,” Cooney said.

According to the registration page (link is below the article), any student from a Cherry Creek School District High School can register.

The deadline for registration is on April 8th, however; if there aren’t at least 20 Poets signed up, the date will be moved to a later time.

To register for the poetry slam, students will have to log in with their CCSD information thru the Google Forms page (see link below) and have 2 Slam poems prepared to perform.

“I didn’t feel comfortable telling people how I felt so I just write it down.  Sometimes it would rhyme, sometimes it didn’t make sense,” Cooney said.

On competition day, the poets will arrive at Eaglecrest at 4:30 P.M. for a workshop. After the workshop, dinner will be served.

The actual competition will start at 6:30 and that is when the poets will perform his or her first poem.

The 4-6 poets who move forward to the second round will preform their second poem. The winner will be the poet with the highest total score from Rounds 1 and 2 combined.

“I like writing slam poetry the best because it’s like, it’s like you’re performing a rant so it gets really exciting,” Cooney said.  “You can do all these things with metaphors like gestures. It’s like a whole world it’s really good.”
