The Smoky Hill Varsity Cheer team competed at the Universal Cheerleaders Association Mile High Regionals (UCA) on Saturday afternoon against many other high schools in the Cherry Creek School District. They placed in the top three, with them taking first place, Grandview High School coming in second place, and Pine Creek High School in third place.

The Smoky Hill cheer team hasn’t placed in first since the 2014 leagues.

The captain; Natalie Brown (Senior), and Zani Liddell (Junior), both were not only really excited but surprised at the results of the competition.

“I felt really excited because it has never really happened throughout my four years at Smoky Hill until Saturday when they called our name as the first place champions. My teammates and I have worked so hard throughout the summer and now, and just to see this moment happen is great,” Brown said as she couldn’t stop smiling.

“We competed on Wednesday and didn’t do so well and I think when it came to us competing again on Saturday made us work together as a team, making sure we believe in each other and ourselves. We didn’t do this for only us or our families but also for Smoky,” Liddell said.

The Smoky Hill cheer team will be competing in a State competition on December 3 at Eaglecrest High School.

“All I can say is that the Buff is back,” Brown said in confidence.
