We Call them Security for a Reason

We shouldn’t disrespect security for doing their job

Devin Guttman, Staffer

I want to start by saying how disconcerting is to see someone disrespect an authority figure directly to their face when they honestly just want to help. It’s one thing to let off steam to a friend, but it’s a whole different story when you’re letting off steam directly to a friend right in front of a security guard.

I was walking out of my fourth period class a few days ago and I got out about one minute early. As I was walking, I passed by these two girls who were in front of a security guard. At first, it just looked like they were having a casual conversation, but I listened a little closer and realized one of these girls was smack talking about this security guard to her friend directly in front of her.

The girl who was being disrespectful had a bag of chips in one hand, and a soda in the other, which as a majority of students know, is against the rules. The security guard was simply doing her job and enforcing the rules of her school. It is sickening to think that she has to be mistreated, just for doing her job.image1-6

I spoke with a few members of security about how they felt about the way some students treat them, and I was actually very surprised by the answer I got from many of them. After speaking with Margie Williams, she told me that of all the students she has to remind of the rules, only about 5 percent of them give her a hard time, which I found hard to believe. Regardless, there really shouldn’t be any percentage of disrespect, especially as intense as the one I encountered.
Security is constantly cutting students slack because they may be having a bad day or maybe aren’t in the best mood. I think it’s time we cut security some slack because all they are doing, is their job.

So why do we call them security? Because their job is to make us feel secure, and it’s time we do the same for them.
