Japanese Club

A small taste of Japan

Japanese Club is your opportunity to learn about the Japanese culture.

The club is held in room II-314, “We meet every red Wednesday, the club starts at 2:45 and ends at 4:00,” president of Japanese club Maria Arkadie said.

“In Japanese club, you don’t have to know Japanese or be in the class, it’s just appreciation the of the culture. We play games, we eat food and sometimes we even make food like just last time we made like a Japanese style savory pancake with meat or shrimp inside of it was really good! We also watch movies or shows, all in Japanese,” Arkadie said.

The members of the club played a game called “Daruma ga koronda.”  Club member, Cadence Rogers said, “There’s the Daruma, the ghost, says ‘Daruma ga Koronda’ which means the ghost has appeared or the ghost is coming. While the person in front is saying that (Daruma ga koronda) all the other players have to move towards the person as fast as they can,” Rodgers said.

The object of the game is to run up to the person who is the Daruma before he/she turns around. “When the ghost or Daruma finishes saying the phrase (Daruma ga koronda) the person in front turns around and if he/she sees anyone moving they can go chase after them and if you’re being chased after you have to run back to the base line. So pretty much it’s red light, green light and tag combined,” Rodgers said.
