DIY Togas

different ways to make your own toga at home

Sabrina Chavez, Staffer

Calling all seniors: It is the week we have all been waiting for. Thursday, Sept. 15 is toga day.

Whether your toga is for a Halloween costume or for spirit week, making a toga at home is easier than you think.

The first step to making your own toga is to pick a sheet with color or designs. Most people chose to use maroon, purple or white, but you can pick any color you would like and stand out. Then chose whether you want the one-shoulder toga, the halter top toga or the sari-style toga.

For the one-shoulder toga:

  1. Fold the sheet widthwise so that it is the proper size. Your toga should cover your chest to your knees (it may be shorter or longer based on personal taste).
  2. Hold one corner of the sheet in each hand and wrap the sheet around you from behind. Fold the left corner around your body once then pull it over your left shoulder.
  3. Finally, bring the right corner around your body and tie it to the left corner.

The halter-top toga:

  1. Hold your sheet horizontally to your body. Wrap your sheet around yourself a few times as you would with a towel (leave about 3 ft).
  2. Twist the loose corner of the sheet the wrap it over your left shoulder
  3. Lastly, secure the twisted corner with a safety pin.

The Sari-style toga:

  1. Hold the corner of the sheet hip level on your left side (it should cover the front of your body, and not the back).
  2. Wrap the fabric around your back to form a skirt. Make sure to wrap until it overlaps the first corner by a few inches.
  3. Pin the skirt in place at your hip, then throw the remaining part of your sheet over your right shoulder.

The last step is to add accessories. Typically gold accessories accent the toga best. The accessories can include headbands, belts, hair decor, crowns and fake gold tattoos.
