Barbie Bungee

physics class hangs barbie dolls for project

The Barbie Bungee experiment has been a very popular school experiment for many years. The experiment takes place in many physics classes.

The objective is for students to be able to take their data and apply it to the amount of rubber bands needed to drop the Barbie from a certain height without hitting her head or being too far from the ground. The goal is to get barbie as close to the ground as possible.

During these trials, students use rubber bands and barbies. The length of the drop is relative to the amount of rubber bands used. When considering how many rubber bands to use, it is easiest to measure the distance each rubber band drops the barbie; It is also important to use the same barbie for her height and weight. The lab is used to examine linear functions.

“It is important to do this experiment because it teaches students how to work with equations and see how they are applied while having fun.” Said senior Darian Gordon. “By doing this I learned more about how math is applied to real life situations.” Said senior Darian Gordon.

Consideration of the cord length becomes very important to the jumper (Barbie). If the cord is too short, there is no thrill. If the cord is too long, the jumper dies.
